Research Opportunities Abroad for Bryn Mawr College Undergraduates

Through HHMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute)

Science Research Homepage

HHMI's undergraduate and international programs have collaborated
over the past several years to facilitate the placement of undergraduates
from HHMI grantee institutions in the laboratories of HHMI International
Research Scholars. We offer these placements to provide enriching experiences
for students with leading scientists in other countries, and in laboratories
where English is spoken. To date, the programs have placed 40 undergraduates
in Scholars' labs.

HHMI is now inviting applications for summer 2008 placements. As in previous
years, interested students should choose up to five scientists from among the
entire list of Scholars on our Web Site:

http://www.hhmi.org/cgi-bin/scientist_search/search.pl?it=INTERNATIONAL&x=34&
y=12
.

There are no specific deadlines for applying, as you and your students will
need to work out individual arrangements with each Scholar. However, if your
students wish to participate next summer, you should notify us as soon as
possible, as openings may be limited in these labs. Please note the following
in considering your participation. In general we have had positive feedback
from both students and Scholars, but because of some concerns raised, we have
added explicit considerations about funding and emergency medical care below.

* All support for the students, including stipends, travel, room and
board, etc., will be covered through your HHMI grant or other resources at
your institution; neither HHMI nor the Scholars can assume these costs.

* As requested in the information form, please inform us at the time of
your request whether funding for the student is secure or pending. Some
Scholars have been very disappointed after accepting a student, who has later
withdrawn due to lack of funds.

* There must be some structure at your institution for placing students
in overseas study arrangements, to include oversight for student travel,
visas, pre-departure and in-country (including emergency) medical care,
evacuation/repatriation insurance, etc. HHMI relies on the sponsoring
Professor or Program Director to choose students who are best suited to
studying abroad.

* Participating students must sign an assumption of risk/release from
liability form that includes HHMI.

* All selection of undergraduates will be undertaken by the Scholars,
and not by HHMI; program directors, HHMI Professors, and students will need
to contact HHMI at the email address below and we will make initial inquiries
with the selected Scholar(s) (important note: HHMI cannot guarantee that it
will be able to place students with their top selections, although we will
make every effort to do so).

* If the selected Scholars are able to take on students in their labs,
application will be based on whatever procedures the Scholars establish and
will be handled directly between the Scholars and you and your students.

* You are asked to notify HHMI whenever any of your students are placed
in a Scholar's lab and provide descriptions of students' activities,
outcomes, etc. as part of the annual program reports to HHMI.

* Students will be asked to submit written summaries focusing on their
research and overall experience and the impact on their personal and
professional development.

Email your requests with completed student information forms to Patricia
Soochan, Program Officer, at soochanp@hhmi.org. She will coordinate the
requests with Laura Kinkead, Program Officer for the International Program.
We hope that the opportunities afforded by our Scholars will be
scientifically, educationally, and culturally enriching experiences for your
undergraduates.

We look forward to hearing from you.
