February 2014 Archways

Dateline: Sochi

This February, 6,000 Olympic athletes and team members from around the world came together at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Joining them were Mawrters Sara Powell ’15 and Tianyuan Zhang ’15, and Haverford student Katherine Mahoney ’14. The three Russian majors worked as interns for NBCUniversal, broadcasters of the 2014 Winter Games.

“I love skiing and ice skating and was a pre-professional ballerina before I came to Bryn Mawr,” says Powell, “so anything that has to do with athletics is interesting to me.” Powell spent the fall studying in Vladimir, Russia, with the American Council of Teachers of Russian Program.

For Zhang, Sochi is her fourth Olympics, but her first Winter Games. In 2004, she represented her school in welcoming the first-ever Olympics torch to China; in 2008, her choir sang at the opening ceremonies in Beijing; and in 2012, she attended the London games.

At the games, the students are serving as the face of the network as they interact with NBC, Comcast, GE executives, and the network’s advertising clients. Advanced Russian students were invited to apply by NBC, which reached out to the College’s Russian Department on the strength of its national reputation and status as one of only a handful of Russian Language Flagship programs in the country.
